This is a 100% Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs from one of Champagne’s premier Grand Cru villages for Chardonnay (known for chalky soils that produce mineral-driven, age-worthy wines). The cooperative, established in 1937, sources from Grand Cru vineyards in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. It undergoes traditional méthode champenoise, with malolactic fermentation, around 3 years on lees, and additional bottle aging for complexity and creamy texture. It offers a balance of fresh fruit, minerality, and toasty/brioche notes, with fine bubbles and good structure. It is often praised as exceptional value compared to famous single-village wines like those from Salon or Krug’s Clos du Mesnil from the same area.

Critics Reviews (Scores and Tasting Notes):

  • James Suckling: Frequently 93 points. “A wonderfully creamy, round blanc de blancs that has almond-blossom, white-flower, peach, brioche and pie-crust aromas. The bubbles are silky and soft.” Precise, balanced palate with citrus finish.
  • Vinous: 92 points. “Light, green-tinged yellow. Mineral-accented aromas and flavors of candied orange, pear, white flowers, and ginger. Juicy and precise, presenting lively citrus and orchard fruit flavors underscored by chalky minerality. Dry and incisive on the finish, with outstanding clarity and persistence.”

  • Other notes: Creamy yet structured, with white flowers, hazelnut, chalk, brioche, and citrus. Often described as powerful for the price with excellent finesse and aging potential.

Food Pairings:

Versatile due to its acidity, minerality, and creamy texture. Classic matches include:

  • Seafood and shellfish (oysters, scallops, crab, smoked salmon)
  • Fish dishes (especially with citrus or delicate sauces)
  • Poultry or lighter white meats
  • Soft to semi-hard cheeses (e.g., Comté)
  • Appetizers, sushi/sashimi, or creamy risottos It also works with some richer dishes thanks to its structure.

Drink Window:

Drink now through 5–10+ years from purchase, depending on the specific disgorgement/batch. It has good aging potential due to the Côte des Blancs Chardonnay acidity and structure; many enjoy it young for freshness, but it develops more toast, nut, and complexity with time.
