The 2013 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge from Château de Beaucastel is a classic Southern Rhône blend, renowned for its elegance, balance, and aging potential. It displays a deep ruby color with aromas of blueberries, crushed flowers, pepper, violets, spiced fruit compote, garrigue, black tea, and sandalwood. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with flavors of blackcurrant, cherry, undergrowth, blackberry, and hints of herbs and spices. The texture is silky and structured, with well-integrated tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, persistent finish that is fruity, chalky, and dry. This vintage reflects a more northern style than southern, with power from Grenache and depth from Mourvèdre, showcasing resilience in a challenging year.

Food Pairings

This wine pairs excellently with classic meat dishes such as veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted or grilled meats, and rare game. It also complements roast beef and dishes with earthy or spicy elements.

Critics Reviews

  • Wine Advocate (Robert Parker/Jeb Dunnuck): 93 points. “The 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape is a beauty and has a rare level of concentration and depth in the vintage. Blueberry, crushed flowers, pepper, and violet aromas and flavors flow nicely to a medium to full-bodied, structured and tannic Beaucastel that has impressive purity and plenty of length.”
  • James Suckling: 95 points. “Pretty aromas of blueberries, freshly picked strawberries and hints of herbs and spices. Some crushed stones. Full body, fresh acidity, and well-integrated tannins.”

  • Aggregate scores from Wine-Searcher: 90-95 points.

Drink Window

The 2013 vintage is drinking well now but has excellent aging potential. Optimal window: Now through 2035. It benefits from 4-5 years of additional cellaring for peak maturity and can hold for a decade beyond that in good conditions.

Serving Temperature

Serve at around 15°C (59°F). Decanting for 1 hour is recommended to enhance its aromas and soften tannins.
