Product Description:
The 2011 Château Pontet-Canet is a biodynamically produced Pauillac from Bordeaux’s Left Bank, showcasing the estate’s dedication to organic and biodynamic viticulture. Composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, this wine has a deep ruby color with a garnet edge. It presents a refined bouquet of blackberry, cassis, graphite, and spice, with notes of violets, leather, and subtle earthiness. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, with firm, fine-grained tannins, crisp acidity, and a focused, mineral-driven finish. While less concentrated than the 2009 or 2010, it offers elegance, balance, and a classic Pauillac expression from a challenging vintage.
Food Pairings:
Pairs well with roasted or grilled meats such as beef ribeye, lamb shank, or duck breast. It complements dishes like braised beef bourguignon, herb-roasted pork loin, or venison with juniper sauce. Cheeses like aged Cheddar, Manchego, or Gorgonzola enhance its flavors. For vegetarian options, try grilled zucchini with herbs or a mushroom and truffle tart to match its earthy undertones.
Critics Review:
- Robert Parker, Wine Advocate: 93/100 – “Aromas of blackberry, cassis, and graphite… medium-bodied, with fine tannins, bright acidity, and a pure, focused finish… A success for the vintage, with charm and precision.”
- James Suckling: 92/100 – “Pretty nose of blueberries, blackberries, and minerals… Full-bodied with chewy tannins and a fresh, clean finish. Well done for the vintage.”
- Wine Spectator: 91/100 – “Shows graphite, blackberry, and spice, with a solid core of fruit and a taut, chalky spine… Finishes with good drive and balance.” Critics praise its overperformance in a difficult 2011 vintage, noting its structure, purity, and ability to age despite less richness than top years.
Drinking well now with decanting (1–2 hours) but will improve through 2018–2030. It has the potential to last until 2035 under optimal storage, though it’s less long-lived than the 2009 or 2010 due to the vintage’s lighter structure.
