2015 La Rioja Alta 904 Gran Reserva – Spanish Red

$443.35 Inc.VAT (XCD)

SKU#: 3624072415 SPF
Wine: Spanish Red

Country:  Spain

Region:   Rioja (D.O.Ca. Rioja)

Sub-Region:   Primarily Rioja Alta (with some influence from Rioja Alavesa)

Grape Varietal: It is a blend of 90% Tempranillo (from vineyards in Villalba, Briñas, and Rodezno) and 10% Graciano (from Montecillo in Fuenmayor), aged for four years in used American oak barrels followed by further bottle aging.

Why it tastes “sweet” to some people (but isn’t technically sweet):

  • “Sweet spices” — descriptors like vanilla, cinnamon, caramel, coconut, and sweet tobacco come from the long American oak aging, not from sugar.
  • Ripe fruit notes — cherry, plum, dried orange, etc., can give an impression of sweetness, especially when balanced with silky tannins and high acidity.
  • The palate is described as juicy, elegant, refined, and balanced — with polished tannins and freshness — but it finishes dry and savoury, often with tobacco, leather, cedar, and spice.

In short:

  • Dry red wine with complex, evolved, oak-derived aromas that can read as sweet or dessert-like to the nose/palate, but zero perceptible sweetness on the tongue. It’s the opposite of a sweet wine (like a late-harvest or fortified style).

If you’re pairing it, it works beautifully with roasted meats, aged cheeses, or even dark chocolate, as the winery itself suggests for this style. Enjoy!

A classic, elegant Rioja with great aromatic complexity. The nose offers notes of wild strawberry, red cherry, plum, blackberry, cranberry, layered with tertiary aromas of tobacco, brioche, ground coffee, caramel, cedar, cinnamon, mushrooms, sandalwood, and sweet spices. On the palate, it is balanced and refined, with polished tannins, lively acidity, freshness, and a silky texture. The finish is long, delicate, and persistent, showing elegance and depth characteristic of traditional Rioja Gran Reservas.

Food Pairings:

Ideal for special occasions. Pairs well with not-too-spicy meats and fish, stews, main courses, all kinds of meats, and chocolate-based desserts (especially couverture chocolate). Also excellent as an after-dinner drink on its own.

Critics’ Reviews:

  • James Suckling: 98 points – “Very impressive complexity and width on the nose… Really elegant and layered. It goes on and on. A real Rioja Gran Reserva.”
  • Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: 95 points – “Subtlety, elegance, finesse, delicacy and silk… Tasty, very classical, balanced and fresh.”
  • Wine Spectator: 93 points – “Rich and velvety… Reveals fine-grained, chalky tannins… Drink now through 2035.”
  • Other notable scores: Vinous 95, Tim Atkin 96, Guía Peñín 97, Falstaff 96.

Community average on CellarTracker: ~93.5 points.

Drink Window:

  • Drinkable now for its vibrant fruit and structure, but with excellent aging potential. Suggested windows include 2024–2035 or longer (up to 2040+), as it will gain further complexity and silkiness over time.
