Pierre Péters Cuvée de Réserve Brut NV is a flagship non-vintage (NV) Blanc de Blancs Champagne, crafted exclusively from 100% Chardonnay grapes sourced from Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte des Blancs, primarily Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, with additional fruit from Oger, Cramant, and Avize. This elegant Champagne is a blend of the current vintage (often 45-50% of the blend, with recent bottlings based on 2018, 2019, or 2021) and a perpetual reserve dating back to 1988, which includes over 20 vintages. The perpetual reserve, stored in a mix of stainless steel, large oak casks, and concrete, adds depth and complexity. The wine undergoes 24 months of lees aging, contributing to its creamy texture and fine mousse. It has a dosage of 5-7 g/L, balancing vibrant acidity with a touch of richness. The Champagne displays a pale gold color with green highlights, a persistent fine bead, and aromas of lemon zest, green apple, white flowers, fresh almond, brioche, and chalky minerality. On the palate, it is taut, precise, and creamy, with flavors of citrus, pear, and acacia, finishing with saline and mineral notes.

Food Pairings

Pierre Péters Cuvée de Réserve is a versatile food companion due to its vibrant acidity, minerality, and balanced structure. Recommended pairings include:

  • Seafood: Oysters on the half shell, scallop crudo, or lobster risotto, which complement the wine’s saline and citrus notes.
  • Sushi and Sashimi: The wine’s crisp acidity and minerality enhance delicate raw fish flavors.
  • Creamy Cheeses: Goat cheese or soft cheeses like Brie pair well with the creamy texture.
  • Vegetable Dishes: Tempura vegetables or a truffled mushroom tart highlight the wine’s refined structure.
  • Light Poultry or Fish: Grilled white fish or chicken with citrus-based sauces match the wine’s freshness.

Critics Reviews

The Cuvée de Réserve consistently earns high praise from critics, with an average score of 90.5 points from 1,722 community reviews on CellarTracker. Notable professional reviews include:

  • James Suckling (96/100, 08/2023): “Aromas of Italian croissant, cooked apple, and tarte tatin. Medium-bodied with a roundness and freshness. Steely. Floats on the palate like you are in the clouds. 75% from 2019 and 25% perpetual reserve. 5g/L dosage.”
  • Wine Spectator (93/100, 11/2023): “Firm and minerally up front, with well-honed acidity and notes of smoke, chalk, and oyster shell transitioning as they’re integrated with a creamy range of crunchy pear, ripe green apple, pink grapefruit pith, and almond skin flavors. Elegant, but with good complexity and focus.”

  • Decanter (92/100, 10/2023): “The reserve wines bring a delicious, savoury sense of sourdough richness to fresh clementine, lemon, and pale stone fruit, the tension of classic chalky villages still present but rounded out into a wine of impressive persistence.”

  • Wine Advocate (92/100, 08/2022): “Bursts with aromas of crisp stone fruit, orange zest, freshly baked bread, and beeswax. Medium-bodied, ample and pillowy, with a fleshy core of fruit, racy acids, and a saline finish.”

  • Vinous – Antonio Galloni (91/100, 03/2024): “Soft, open-knit, and creamy, the Cuvée de Réserve is wonderfully engaging right out of the gate. Lemon confit, dried flowers, chamomile, baked apple tart, and spice are front and center.”

  • Falstaff (92/100, 10/2024): “Pale straw yellow with silver reflections and a delicate, lively mousse. Delicately herbal and savoury yellow apple and some pineapple on the nose, with candied mandarin oranges and a mineral touch. Medium complexity with a core of fruit sweetness and finesse-rich acidity.”

  • Jancis Robinson MW (16.5/20, 03/2021): “Very fine bead and great, sappy balance between the delicate fruit and something more substantial – presumably the reserve wines. Really quite fine and rewarding.”

  • Jeb Dunnuck (90/100, 11/2022): “Vibrant with soft lime candy, wet rock, and candied green apple. A fantastic aperitif with an energetic mousse.”

Drink Window:

The drink window varies slightly by critic but generally spans from the point of disgorgement (often 2020-2024 for recent bottlings) to 2030-2032:

  • James Suckling: Drink now (2025).
  • Jancis Robinson: 2021–2025

  • Jeb Dunnuck: 2022–2032.

  • Antonio Galloni: 2024–2030.

  • Decanter: 2023–2028.

  • Wine Advocate: 2022–2032.   A general recommendation is to enjoy it now through 2030 for optimal freshness, though it can age further due to the perpetual reserve’s complexity.

Serving Temperature

  • The ideal serving temperature for Pierre Péters Cuvée de Réserve is 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its vibrant acidity, fine mousse, and delicate aromas. Serve slightly cooler than room temperature but avoid over-chilling to preserve the wine’s complexity.
